When we’re talking about wall cladding we are referring to the placement of a layer of suitable building materials above the brick or cement, during building renovations, in order to achieve a desired aesthetic (decoration) or functional (insulation) effect.
The materials most commonly used for this purpose in Greece and around the world are natural rocks (stone or marbles).
The cladding of the walls of a building is a particularly important task, often overlooked during its construction, either to save money or by sheer ignorance. In reality, however, the investment of our walls protects us from weather phenomena and in the long run proves the only real economic choice.
So, what are the “split face” tiles?
By splitface we mean the way in which the visible surface of the rock is processed and highlighted. They are essentially natural rocks (slate or limestone) cut into special dimensions, the face of which has been treated to obtain a textured relief or aged sensation.
The dimensions of the blocks and the depth and roughness can vary according to the customer’s wish or the architectural design of the building. You can even find tiles of artificial rock in the market…
Aesthetic upgrade
The split-face rocks are a perfect fit for both outdoor usage (in walls, fences, pavements, etc.) as well as indoors (usually in kitchens, bathrooms and fireplaces) and they can also be used in special architectural and decorative applications.
The wide variety in sizes, colors and textures of split face rock tiles will allow you to use them in harmony with every architectural design, traditional or modern.
Natural insulation
A very important use of split face rocks is the protection they provide against humidity and harsh weather conditions.
A clad or lined wall keeps the temperature inside the house more stable (thermal insulation) as the air and the cold have difficulty getting inside. In addition, rainwater slides over the rock, keeping the wall dry and preventing corrosion.
In addition, by cladding the outer walls with splitface marble, you’re also soundproofing your house minimizing the entrance of external noises.
If on the other hand you decide to treat the inner walls, noises coming from the kitchen or bathroom won’t disturb your sleep ever again…!
Is split face cladding expensive?
The prices of split-face rock tiles vary according to the color, dimension and the roughness of their surface. They are sold by square meter and their price starts at 15 € (around $ 17 per m2). To get an estimate of this investment’s cost, all you have to do is measure the size of the surface you want to clad and multiply it by the cost/m2.
